Buying a CNC waterjet machine is only the beginning. The real question is: how quickly can the machine be installed, commissioned and put into production?
That question decides the return on the investment far more than the specification sheet does. A machine that is not level, not correctly aligned and not operated by a trained team will not produce the results the brochure promised — however good the machine is.
This article documents a Yuanli waterjet installation in Vietnam: positioning, assembly, system connection, cutting head setup, inspection, trial cutting and operator training — and what Yuanli's after-sales support covers in Southeast Asia. Installation, commissioning, operator training, technical guidance, maintenance guidance, spare parts and long-term support are part of what the customer buys.
A CNC waterjet is not a machine that can simply be switched on after it is unloaded from the truck.
An abrasive waterjet combines a high-pressure water system, an abrasive delivery system, a multi-axis cutting head, a CNC controller and a precision table. Each system must be set up correctly, and each interacts with the others. Small errors at installation do not stay small — they surface later as inconsistent cuts, unstable pressure or parts that do not repeat.
Correct installation affects the things that decide whether the machine is profitable:
Machine stability — poor support and levelling cause vibration, and vibration shows in the cut edge
Cutting accuracy — alignment between head, table and CNC coordinate system
Water and high-pressure system — supply, filtration and pressure integrity
Abrasive feeding — consistent flow is what makes a cut repeatable
Cutting head — height, alignment and condition of the head assembly
Software — the machine is only as good as the program it runs
Operator safety — high-pressure water and abrasive are not forgiving; safe behaviour is taught, not assumed
Production consistency — running the same job tomorrow and getting the same part
The practical conclusion for a buyer: installation and training quality is part of what you are buying, so it belongs in the purchase decision — not in the afterthoughts once the machine has arrived.
The photographs below illustrate that sequence.
The machine has to go exactly where it will work, and the site must be ready before it arrives: a level floor with adequate load-bearing capacity, clearance around the machine for the cutting table and maintenance access, and a route wide enough for the larger assemblies.
The gantry beam is the most sensitive part of the move — long, heavy and required to stay straight. Lifting it correctly, with proper slings and a spreader where needed, protects both the beam and the people doing the work.
Once the main structure is in position, the machine is assembled and brought back into alignment. Components separated for shipping are reinstalled, and protective film comes off only after the machine is in its final position — the film is what protects surfaces during handling.
This stage covers the water supply, high-pressure line, abrasive delivery system, electrical connection and control cabinet.
The control cabinet is the operator's interface with the whole machine — CNC program, cutting parameters, pressure settings and system status. Its position matters, because the operator works from it constantly.
The cutting head is where the process actually happens. Height, alignment and the head-to-table relationship all affect cut quality directly — the part of the installation where an experienced technician makes a visible difference, and the part operators most need to understand.
Before production starts, the machine is checked system by system — pressure, water flow, abrasive feed, head assembly, CNC movement and safety functions — to find problems while the technician is still on site, rather than after the first real order.
The machine runs through its movements and functions without cutting production material, verifying the mechanical and control systems together.
Trial cutting is where the installation is confirmed: the machine cuts actual material to a drawing and the result is checked against the requirement. It is also the most useful moment for the customer, because it shows what the machine does with the material the customer really processes — not a demo sample.
Training runs alongside commissioning, so operators learn on the real machine while the technician is still there to explain and correct. By the end, the customer's team should be able to set up a job, cut it, check it and shut down safely — without support from Yuanli.
Yuanli's installation support follows four stages.
Technical guidance for machine positioning, site requirements and setup, so that the customer's factory is prepared before the machine arrives.
Checking that the machine and its systems operate correctly — the water system, the high-pressure system, the abrasive feeding, the cutting head and the CNC controller.
Running trial cutting to verify that the machine performs to the requirement on real material.
Training the customer's operators on the machine they will actually run, covering:
Machine operation and daily startup / shutdown
CNC software and program setup
Cutting setup — material, thickness, pressure, speed
Abrasive system operation and checks
Cutting head inspection and maintenance
Daily inspection and safety procedures
The aim is not to hand over a machine, but to hand over a machine the customer's team can run confidently.
Training is arranged according to the machine configuration and the operators' experience: a workshop with existing CNC experience needs different coverage from one that is new to CNC equipment.
A typical structure covers:
Day | Focus |
|---|---|
Day 1 | Machine structure, safety and daily checks |
Day 2 | Basic operation and startup / shutdown routine |
Day 3 | CNC software and program operation |
Day 4 | Material, thickness and cutting parameter setup |
Day 5 | Trial cutting and application practice |
Day 6 | Basic maintenance and troubleshooting |
Day 7 | Operator practice and final technical handover |

A waterjet installation only creates value if it cuts the work the shop actually sells. These are the applications customers commonly put a waterjet to work on.
Sink cutouts, faucet and hob openings, and custom shapes. Quartz is dense and the cut edge is visible, so piercing an opening directly in the slab — without a lead-in drill hole — matters. See waterjet cutting for quartz countertops.
Countertops, architectural components and custom profiles.
Decorative patterns, inlay and custom shapes — including medallion work produced from a CAD pattern.
Countertops, vanity tops and miter-related applications where the configuration supports them. Porcelain and sintered stone are thin and brittle, which makes cold cutting an advantage at visible edges.
Architectural and decorative glass, complex patterns and intricate shapes.
Not every Yuanli machine performs every application. The right configuration depends on material, thickness and the shapes on your drawings — which is what the configuration conversation is for.
Bridge saws and waterjets are not competing for the same work as often as the sales conversation suggests. They solve different problems.
A bridge saw is efficient for straight, flat cutting. If your production is slabs cut to size, a bridge saw usually does it faster and more economically; there is no reason to put that work on a waterjet.
Waterjet processing is the better fit when the work involves:
Complex profiles a blade cannot produce
Internal openings — sink cutouts, hob openings, decorative inserts
Curves and irregular shapes
Custom patterns and inlay work
Precise CAD-based shapes that must match the drawing
Multi-material cutting on the same table
Bevel and angled cutting, with suitable 5-axis configurations
Cold cutting also removes heat from the equation at the cut edge, which matters on materials that discolour or stress under thermal cutting.
Different machines suit different production tasks, and many stone shops run both: a bridge saw for straight work, a waterjet for the parts a saw cannot make. Yuanli builds 3-axis, AB and AC 5-axis waterjet platforms and the Water Bridge / SawJet combination, which puts both processes on one machine.
For industrial machinery, distance is a real cost: how quickly a technician reaches the factory, how quickly a spare part arrives, and how much production time is lost while a machine is down.
Yuanli's Southeast Asia service covers customers in markets including Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Myanmar.
For customers in Southeast Asian countries and regions, free on-site installation and up to 7 days of free training and technical support are provided.
