Cold cutting for stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and titanium — complex profiles, thick plate and internal features, with no heat-affected zone.
Metal fabricators come to waterjet when the cut edge matters and heat is the problem. A thermal process changes the material at the cut: the edge is left harder, discoloured or stressed, and on thick plate the part can move as it cools. Abrasive waterjet removes material mechanically instead. There is no heat at the kerf, so the part holds its geometry and the edge is ready for the next operation.
| Material | Indicative maximum thickness | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | up to 200 mm | Structural parts, flanges, brackets |
| Stainless steel | up to 150 mm | Food-grade, marine, architectural |
| Titanium | up to 50 mm | Aerospace and medical components |
| Aluminium | Confirmed per application | Panels, frames, machined parts |
| Brass | Confirmed per application | Decorative and precision parts |
Straight 2D profiles, brackets and plate work where the cut stays vertical and the priority is throughput on flat parts.
Bevels and complex contours in one setup, for parts where an angled edge or a three-dimensional profile is part of the drawing.
Waterjet plus milling, drilling and edge processing on one platform, for parts that would otherwise move between machines.
The difference is in the process, not in a claim about any one machine. A thermal cut introduces heat into the material, and the material responds: a narrow zone at the kerf is altered, the plate can distort as it cools, and on stainless steel the cut face may need pickling or grinding before it can be used.
Abrasive waterjet cuts with a stream of water and abrasive, so there is no heat-affected zone, no thermal distortion and no dross to remove at the edge. For parts that have to hold their geometry after cutting — flanges, brackets, machined blanks and fabricated assemblies — that removes a step from the process and a risk from the job.
